NET Scheme

NET Scheme

To enhance the teaching and learning of English, the NET Scheme has been implemented in all public primary schools since 2002. Over the years, our school has developed our school-based NET programme to cater to specific needs of our students.

Our English Teachers have worked closely in collaboration with our NET and Advisory Teacher from the NET Section in planning, developing, and co-teaching for the school-based reading programme to enhance our students’ English competency and promote the appreciation of the English language and enjoyment of English learning.

Development of Text Sets (DTS)

In particularly, our school has joined the Development of Text Sets (DTS) programme in the effort of exposing our students to various text types that are both at and beyond their current reading proficiency. Building on what students have been learning in the General English programme, the DTS theme-based units aim to extend students’ language-learning experience and deepen their knowledge and vocabulary power on different themes. These language-learning experiences range from having activities at school to activities outside of school (e.g., having a Pet Show, making tuna sandwiches, paying a visit to the Central Library, taking a ride on the tram, etc.)

Reading Programme

Our English Team values reading as it is essential and plays a crucial role in helping students to develop their English proficiency. Just as important, we believe learning English through reading should be fun. We strive to develop and implement a reading programme that is interactive and integrative. During our reading lessons, we provide students with different reading opportunities to have Shared and Group Reading with the teacher as well as Buddy and Independent Reading to further develop students’ reading skills. After reading, we have designed activities that help to consolidate their learning. For instance, students plan and have their own class birthday party, put on costumes and use props to role-play a story, be an investigator to scan and find information for a suspect and write a descriptive paragraph about their pet for the audience to guess at a Pet Show.

Drama Club

As mentioned, learning English should be fun! It is our desire to see students shine and enjoy themselves as they perform on stage. To stretch students’ learning experience, not only have students been performing at school, they also have different opportunities to perform at city halls for the public. Learning English through drama is definitely one of the ways that students can build their confidence in speaking English as they come out of their comfort zone to perform in front of an audience.

English Room

We encourage our students to be exposed to English on a daily basis. Throughout the week, different English learning activities have been provided for students to be active English-users. On English Tuesdays, the English Room is opened for students to read books with teachers and Reading Buddies. At the same time, English Ambassadors are ready to perform their duties of helping their fellow classmates to practice blending letter sounds. On Wednesday mornings, students are invited to go into the English Room for read-aloud sessions. Different children stories and book series have been introduced to students during this time. During recesses and lunch breaks on different days, the English Room is opened for students not only to read books but also to watch videos and play games.
